'Drive,' 'Marilyn' miss Oscar score cut

Cliff Martinez's music for 'Drive' was left off the Academy's 100 eligible scores for the 2011 Oscars. In the case of "My Week With Marilyn," composer Conrad Pope submitted his score but the theme written by Alexandre Desplat (used by Pope throughout the film) had an impact that was "too great to overlook," the committee ruled.Although the Academy on Thursday released a list of 97 scores that are eligible for nomination for the 2011 Oscars, what's more interesting is the list of the ones that were disqualified, including the music for "Drive" and "My Week With Marilyn."Both were considered possible finalists but were disqualified, sources inside the music-branch executive committee say, because they ran afoul of the Acad's strict rules. In the case of Cliff Martinez's music for "Drive," sources say there were two problems: songs instead of score at key dramatic points, and Martinez not being the only composer listed on the official studio cue sheet. Apparently two other names were included as contributing to some cues.Acad rules disqualify "scores... diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs, or assembled from the music of more than one composer."The cue sheet is the official studio record of who composed each cue, or individual piece of music, in a score. Exact timings, how each is used and music publishing information are also included. In the case of "My Week With Marilyn," composer Conrad Pope submitted his score but the theme written by Alexandre Desplat (used by Pope throughout the film) had an impact that was "too great to overlook," the committee ruled.Committee members explained that the score might have been eligible if Desplat and Pope had directly collaborated -- as last year's Oscar winners, "Social Network" composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, did -- and had they submitted together as a team. But Desplat wrote his theme and then moved on; Pope wrote a score that incorporated the Desplat theme at key moments."I'm disappointed, but I understand the Academy's ruling," said Pope. Martinez could not immediately be reached; his score for "Contagion" remains eligible. Also disqualified by the committee were Marco Beltrami's score for "Soul Surfer" (again, too many names on the cue sheet, a commitee source said) and Michael Giacchino's score for "50 / 50" (too many songs "diluting" the impact of the score). The concept of "partial contributors" -- another Acad rulebook phrase -- has been increasingly problematic for the music branch in recent years. It started with "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight," when screen-credited composers Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard weren't the only ones listed on the Warner Bros. cue sheet.Zimmer later explained that he added names of people who assisted in the creation of the score in order to ensure that they were financially rewarded later on, since the cue sheet is used to determine performance royalties and assures that those listed will make back-end money (sometimes substantial sums, as with the "Batman" films)."The issue of authorship is often confused when there are other names attached to that of the submitting composer," a high-ranking committee member said. "It's hard, if not impossible, to determine what sort of work the other name represents. Who did what?"The number of scores that are being created with very low budgets has led to a growing misuse of the film's cue sheet to later compensate orchestrators and technical assistants, officials say, something that performing-rights societies ASCAP and BMI frown upon. They say the cue sheet is the only legal document that can be relied on to precisely determine authorship of a score. 'Wrath From The Titans' Trailer: Hell Involves Earth

Mike Worthington, prepare to suffer the "Wrath from the Leaders." The "Avatar" actor has returned as Perseus within the "Leaders" follow up, that they guaranteed will improve compared to first outing within the series. Present day discharge of the "Wrath" trailer leaves us feeling certain that the follow up will meet Worthington's hype. The film happens ten years after "Clash," where Perseus is living a quieter existence together with his 10-year-old boy Helius like a fisherman. But everything changes when Zeus involves him for help after he finds out that Hades and Ares have plotted using the leader from the Leaders, Kronos, to capture Zeus and produce him towards the underworld. As Zeus manages to lose the fight for supremacy, the Leaders are unleashed and produce about hell on the planet. Enter Rosamund Pike as Full Andromeda, reprising her role because the love interest for Perseus according to all of the smooching within the trailer. She teams track of the demi-god, in addition to Poseidon's half-human boy Argenor and also the fallen god Hephaestus, to try and stop the Leaders and produce peace back around the world. The experience sequences look really, great within this trailer, but that is not necessarily an assurance the movie will improve than its predecessor. The experience and CGI looked great within the "Clash from the Leaders" trailer too, but did not act as well within the flick in general. Still, that final shot of the flaming monster -- we are speculating a Titan -- flailing around in the ground looks freaking awesome. And we are certainly suckers for your brief appearance of Cyclops at the outset of a clip. Can be whether "Wrath" is going to be much better than "Clash" was, but to date our hopes are elevated. The film hits theaters on March 30, 2012. Watch a clip at Apple! What have you think about the "Wrath from the Leaders" teaser trailer? Inform us within the comments section below or on Twitter!

Kids might not pick on the environment message, and also the story is not pretty much as good because the original's, however the animation is superb and also the father-boy plotline is really a sweet indication of why parents must always support their kids' dreams. Plus, Kaira Pitt and Matt Damon play Will and Bill, two krill facing an existential crisis regarding their purpose within the ocean. They are amusing. Are You Aware?: Mumble's dancing moves were choreographed by tap maestro Savion Glover! Watch a clip! Parent Concerns: There's less to resist, but there's some mild peril -- especially because the iceberg strikes and then using the elephant closes. Academy Honors Oprah Winfrey, James Earl Jones and Dick Smith

Academy Honors Oprah Winfrey, James Earl Jones and Dick Smith By Gregg Kilday November 14, 2011 Photo by Getty Images James Earl Jones and Oprah Winfrey Emotions ran high at the third annual Governors Awards on Saturday night as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences celebrated the careers of actor James Earl Jones and make-up artist Dick Smith and then paid tribute to Oprah Winfrey, the recipient of its Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.Jones, who accepted his honor remotely, from a theater stage in London where he is currently appearing in "Driving Miss Daisy" opposite Vanessa Redgrave, said, "I am deeply honored, mighty grateful and" showing off a word he had learned in the U.K. "just plain gobsmacked."Smith, who was hailed as the godfather of make-up, was nearly overcome as he got out the words, "I have loved being a make-up artists so muchto have so much kindness given to meis just too muchI am so grateful."Winfrey, from her seat in the audience also wiped away a tear, as a young Barnard college student, Ayanna Hall, who had gone to school on a scholarship from the Oprah Winfrey Foundation, testified about the impact that Winfrey has had on thousands of lives. Speaking from her heart rather than prepared remarks, Winfrey explained the guiding principle between her commitment to philanthropy, saying, "Your life matters. You matter. What you do matters."After a week in which the Academy first saw Brett Ratner and Eddie Murphy drop out of producing and hosting the 84th Academy Awards, forcing the Academy to rush to quickly recruit Brian Grazer and Billy Crystal to save the show, the evening represented a reassuring return to tradition, even if this particular dinner, a non-televised dinner at which Academy governors mingle with Oscar hopefuls, is a relatively new invention. The program began with Darth Vadar, in a nod to Jones' signature vocal performance in "Star Wars," making his way through the grand ballroom at the Hollywood & Highland Center to the podium, where he removed his helmet only to reveal Academy president Tom Sherak beneath the mask.In the only public acknowledgement of the Oscar show near meltdown, Sherak began his remarks by asking, "How was your week?," to a round of laughter. He then quickly segued to the matters at hand. After calling out each of the honorees by name, he also took a moment to remember the producers Laura Ziskin, who died in June, and Gil Cates, who died Oct. 31. Both had produced Oscar shows Ziskin twice and Cates 14 times and, said Sherak, "to us, they were family" as he offered up a toast. The formal ceremony began with Mary J. Blige performing "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" from "The Lion King," for which Jones played the voice of Mafusa.Alec Baldwin kicked off the testimonials to Jones by reminding the crowd of the range of roles Jones has played, confessing "I wanted James Earl Jones's career that's what every actor wants" and also tossing in a pretty credible impersonation of Jones' deep bass voice. Glenn Close, admitting that watching Jones perform on stage in "Fences" reduced her to "a sobbing, stammering mess," said, "I just want to say thank you for what he has given me and all those who have been touched by his supreme artistry."Although Jones, 80, couldn't attend in person, his acceptance, filmed on the stage of the Wyndham Theatre after he'd completed a matinee performance, still had a spontaneous feel to it. After taking their bows, Redgrave asked the audience to stay in their seats for the presentation of the honorary Oscar, which former Academy president Sid Ganis, who was in the theater audience, had brought with him to London.Making a surprise appearance, Oscar winner Ben Kingsley walked out of the wings to hand the statuette to Jones. Delighted, Jones, said, "If an actor's nightmare is being on stage naked and not knowing your lines, what the heck do you call this? I have my clothes on, I know my words, and then out from the wings steps Sir Ben Kingsley and he hands me an Oscar! Frankly, what the heck else to call it but an actor's wet dream."The portion of the program devoted to Smith's work was introduced by Linda Blair, who was 13 when she starred in "The Exorcist." For that movie, Smith transformed her into a head-spinning demon. "For me, it was not as much fun as I think it was for Dick," she recalled fondly. "It was not a little girl's dream." But she explained how Smith worked hard to perfect the make-up demands of director William Friedkin, who insisted that Blair be recognizable beneath the effects. Writer, director and producer J. J. Abams, who included a nod to Smith in his recent film "Super 8," told of how as a movie-obsessed kid he'd written Smith a fan letter and how Smith sent back "an old, but clean tongue from 'The Exorcist,'" complete with instructions that Abrams should use peanut butter to stick it to his own tongue. The two struck up a correspondence that went on for years.Fellow make-up artist Rick Baker paid further testament to Smith, who received just one Oscar, for "Amadeus," during his career, saying not only did he invent "some new technique on basically every film he ever did" but then he also shared his inventions with his fellow make-up artists, circulating mimeographed notes that he scrupulously kept to describe his art.Prefacing his own remarks by saying "Please forgive me, my memory's not very good these days," Smith, 89, concluded, as his voice broke, "I will never forget tonight from the bottom of my heart."While a taped piece about Winfrey's career began with excerpts from her film performances in "The Color Purple" and "Beloved" and noted some of the movies she's had a hand in producing like "The Great Debaters" and "Precious," the focus was on her many philanthropic activities.First, though, producer Larry Gordonearned the biggest laughs of the night by recalling a party in Santa Barbara where he was amazed by Winfrey's ability to match him in downing tequila shots. "Oprah," he told her at the time, "you're a fking moose." The other guests were horrified, but the next morning, spotting him across the room, Winfrey defused the situation by throwing her arms open wide and proclaiming, "Baby, it's your fking moose!" "Congratulations my dearest, darling moose," he told her.John Travolta, one of Winfrey's long-standing friends, took credit for introducing Winfrey to tequila at his 50th birthday party, and added, "I would give you a second Oscar and that for your film acting because you are a damn good actress. It was left to Maria Shriver who has known Winfrey since they worked together at WJZ-TV in Baltimore in 1978 to laud Winfrey's generosity. "She's incredibly comfortable giving. She likes to give to her family, to her friends, to her community and to her country. She's always thinking how she can help others," Shriver said. "She's not good at one thing, she's really not good at sitting there accepting the love that so many people want to give her."When she did take the stage, Oprah, 57, credited Quincy Jones for seeing her on a TV talk show in Chicago and casting her in "The Color Purple," saying it was "the only reason I am here tonight.""I never imagined myself receiving an Oscar, certainly not for doing what I believe is a part of my calling, a part of my being," she added. Speaking of her life's journey, she cited "The Help," explaining the movie told the story of both her grandmother and her mother, who both worked as maids.Given her background, she continued, "It's unimaginable that I would be standing before you, voted by the board of governors. So when I say thank you, the thank you comes from a place deeper even than I know, because it's not just from me, it's from everybody who made me possible." 'The Adventures of Tintin' Sails to $55.8 Million International Debut

American audiences won't get a chance to see 'The Adventures of Tintin' until Dec. 21, but citizens around the globe are already buying tickets for the Steven Spielberg-directed motion-capture spectacle in seeming bulk. 'Tintin' bowed with $55.8 million in international ticket sales, finishing on top in 17 of the 19 countries where it debuted. Based on the popular comic book series by Herge (the pen-name of Belgian artist Georges Rémi), 'The Adventures of Tintin' was most popular in France: the film opened with $21.5 million on just 935 screens, good for the biggest opening ever for a non-sequel in the country. To put that in perspective, 'Tintin' earned roughly 80 percent more than 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,' 50 percent more than 'Ratatouille' and 'Alice in Wonderland' and 41 percent more than 'Spider-Man.' For the year, 'Tintin' trailed only 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2' in terms of opening weekend box office. Elsewhere, 'Tintin' earned $10.7 million in the United Kingdom, $6.7 million in Spain (good for 50 percent of the entire market) and $4.6 million in Germany. In Belgium, the film grossed $2.1 million (the second biggest opening of the year), while in Denmark it pulled in an impressive $1.6 million on just 221 screens. Starring Jamie Bell, Daniel Craig, Andy Serkis, Nick Frost and Simon Pegg (plus Snowy the dog), 'The Adventures of Tintin' is being distributed by Paramount and Sony around the globe. It has yet to open in China, India, Australia, Mexico, South America and the United States. Expecting 'Tintin' to be one of the biggest global box-office stories for the remainder of 2011 seems like a pretty safe bet. Following Success of 'The Lion King,' Disney Will Re-Release Four Other Films in 3D

The story of the box office in September was not that 'Warrior' grossed only $1 million more total than 'The Debt' earned over Labor Day weekend, but that 'The Lion King 3D' rerelease was a juggernaut. The Disney reissue topped the box office for two straight weekends in September and has earned $80 million to-date. As a result, this news should come as no surprise: Disney and Disney/Pixar announced plans on Tuesday to re-release four past films in 3D over the next two years. Per the press release, 'Beauty and the Beast' will be the first classic to get the third dimensional treatment when it hits theaters on Jan. 13, 2012 opposite 'Contraband,' 'Man on Ledge' and 'Premium Rush, three male-heavy actioners inexplicably scheduled for the same weekend. Later next year, Disney/Pixar will release 'Finding Nemo' on Sept. 14, 2012. Looking ahead, 'Monsters, Inc.' will get a theatrical re-release on Jan. 18, 2013, four months before 'Monsters University' -- the 'Monsters Inc.' prequel -- hits theaters on June 21, 2013. Rounding out the list, 'The Little Mermaid' arrives on Sept. 13, 2013. "Great stories and great characters are timeless, and at Disney we're fortunate to have a treasure trove of both," said Walt Disney Studios president Alan Bergman in a statement. "We're thrilled to give audiences of all ages the chance to experience these beloved tales in an exciting new way with 3D -- and in the case of younger generations, for the first time on the big screen." Offering younger audiences the chance to experience these favorites in a movie theater is well and good, but it appears Disney has shrewdly taken advantage of what people have known for years: September and January are dead theatrical months and re-issuing beloved classics -- especially ones geared toward kids -- is a surefire way to box office nirvana. With a "treasure trove" of timeless classics, expect this gimmick to extend well past 2013, with other studios jumping into the fray. UPDATE: Prometheus Selling Back Stage; The Hollywood Reporters Parent Company Dropping Assets Like Flies Now

The Hollywood Reporters Parent Company Continues To Cost Cut: Prometheus Pulled Plug On Hollywood Creative Directory UPDATE: Prometheus Global Media is now confirming what I reported last night; that it’s unloading yet another showbiz asset.Instead of calling this a sale, it’s calling this a financial “alliance” witha group of investors led by John Amato who used to be president of a NYC taxi advertising company called Show Media.Amato now becomes CEO of Back Stage. When Prometheus couldn’t sell the media outlet outright,Prometheus joint owner Guggenheim Partners put up most of money for the investor group to buy it.”They are going to position it as not a sale, but as a strategic partnership. But this is not true: Guggenheim is doing debt financing and holding a carried minority interest, but this new group is assuming control (including control of board),” one of my insiders tells me. Though no financial details were announced, insiders tell methe investorgroup is putting up $5 million and Guggenheim is financing $10M to $15M more. “Again, they are trying to pretend it’s not a sale for PR reasons, but in any other company it would be regarded as a sale,” the source said. Explained another insider, “They’re dropping assets like flies now.” EXCLUSIVE SUNDAY 11 PM: The Hollywood Reporter’s parent company is unloading more assets to cut costs. Still, the sale of Back Stage is a surprise because of its unique and longtime positioning in the entertainment marketplace. My insiders tell me that Prometheus Media Group ishanding overthe actors’tool to a group of investors with Prometheus joint owner Guggenheim Partnersputting up most of money for them to buy it. “Guggenheim essentially is financing the purchase of Back Stage,” one source explained to me.The official announcement is supposed to come on Tuesday. Back Stage is a 50-year-oldresourcefor real-time theatre, TV andmovie casting and audition information and job listings and acting adviceand entertainment news for boththe East and West Coasts. It is regularly read byperforming arts professionals including working and aspiring actors, singers, dancers, comedians, models, and crew.Since December 2009, it has been owned by Prometheus Global Media, the embattled parent company of titles like The Hollywood Reporter, Billboard, and Adweek(which as of Aprilincludes Brandweek and Mediaweek as well). Recently, Deadlinewrote that The Hollywood Reporter was laying off and/or firing staff because of financial problems. Soon after, internal sourcesrevealed to Deadlinethat the Hollywood Creative Directory employees, comprised of its publishing director of 17 years Valencia McKinley and her staff of three, were laid off and informed that the outlet had been sold. There’s no question that Prometheuskeeps looking to cut costs, especially with The Hollywood Reporter hemorrhaging the most red ink of all its media properties because of soaring overhead and collapsed subscriptions.Ad Week and Billboard also are in trouble.Prometheus, initially entitled e5 Global Media, bought Back Stage as part of an 8-title acquisition from The Nielsen Company. The parent company was formedjointly by private equity partner Pluribus Capital Management co-founder Jimmy Finkelsteinand financial services firm Guggenheim Partners’ Todd Boehly who is managing partner in the Office Of The CEO. The pair are now running Prometheus after the CEO they hired, Richard Beckman, was recently sidelined to events planning. As a result, Finkelstein, who is chairman ofPrometheus, now oversees daily management. Look for myupcoming expanded behind-the-scenes biz report about Prometheus and The Hollywood Reporter. Two on Twain: The Review

Mark Twain is not just the key author in American letters. Throughout yesteryear century, Twain themselves -- the white-colored suit, the cigar, the folksy advice -- has become an legendary character. Now, two new books -Body a memoir, another a little of comedy -- obtain the icon since the jumping-off point for own tales. Nobody is doing more to shape our picture of Twain in comparison to actor Hal Holbrook (All the Leader's Males, Wall Street), that's been playing him in the one-guy show a lot more than Samuel Clemens did -- 57 versus 47 years. Harold: The Boy Who Increased being Mark Twain (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, $30) covers just the first 35 years of Holbrook's existence, from his truly Dickensian childhood -- abandoned by his parents, one for your stage as well as the other with an insane asylum, at 2 -- to barnstorming nationwide just like a youthful actor. The truly fascinating part covers the 15 years from college graduation to fame playing Twain on Broadway and might be subtitled "working out from the actor together with a man.Inch Holbrook not only produces insightfully about learning the craft of acting as well as the work that went into creating Twain but furthermore frankly about his ambitions as well as the toll they needed on his family. "I see now I used to be a crippled figure. ... The children. This type of mess. I dropped the ball there ... permit them to fall asleep to sea after i was fighting it with Harold to uncover who the hell he was." That kind of energetic self-reflection should earn Harold an area round the shelf connected having a ambitious actor. In Mark Twain's Autobiography 1910-2010, (Fantagraphics, $19.99), Adult Frolic in the water contributor and comics creator Michael Kupperman (Lizard 'n' Sausage) reworks Holbrook's Twain just like a Zelig-like immortal cruising using a century of existence after his 1910 dying. The story is told in three dozen short sections, a few that are outlined comic-style. A couple of from the tales are amusing koans of absurdist comedy -- Twain since the unknown fourth astronaut round the Apollo 11 mission is fabulous. Despite the fact that often it has the appearance of a Saturday Evening Live skit extended in to a feature film -- perfect in small doses although not sustainable around the longer haul -- the premise is just too good to abandon. Relativity Media Hiring James McTeigue On Period Crime Drama Ness/Capone

EXCLUSIVE: James McTeigue, who just completed the John Cusack-starrer The Raven for Relativity Media, is getting back in business with Ryan Kavanaugh. I’m told that McTeigue is making a deal to direct Ness/Capone, the Grant Pierce Myers script that made the 2010 Black List and puts a new spin on the epic battle between Eliot Ness and Al Capone during the Prohibition Era 1920s. Relativity acquired it in April. McTeigue is negotiating, even as he is casting his next film, Message From the King, the Oliver Butcher- and Stephen Cornwell-scripted thriller about an enigmatic outsider who comes to L.A. to investigate the sudden disappearance of his sister. That film is being financed by FilmNation Entertainment. Ness/Capone covers the feud in more shades of gray than were evident in The Untouchables. Ness is a skirt-chasing 26-year-old publicity hound who seemed to get an adrenaline charge out of courting danger, kicking in doors, smashing moonshine stores and rubbing it in the noses of Capone and other mobsters. He would parade confiscated bootleg trucks past Capones hotel, calling Capone in advance to suggest he look out the window. Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell, Gianni Nunnari, Jason Felts and Rene Rigal are producing. McTeigue is repped by CAA.
