Why dont my vocals ever sound on the beat?

i use cool edit pro, which is a really good production program, and im
really good with it. And i have a high quality condensor microphone,
But it seems like every time i put vocals over a beat, it just dosnt
sound like the pros... It dosnt sound like its WITH the beat, it
sounds like its just on top or on the side. You know what im saying?
Why is this? Is there effects that help with this? Advice? I heard its
the reverb?
